Biography

Armando León is a musician and orchestra conductor from Tlaxcala, Mexico. His debut as a guest conductor with the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (OSUAEH) at 19, as well as his conviction to inspire, transform, and build through music, has marked the beginning of a career that has led him to stages in Bulgaria, Spain, the United States, and Mexico. Currently, he has been accepted at the Bulgarian National Academy of Music “Prof. Pancho Vladigerov” (Национална музикална академия „Проф. Панчо Владигеров“) in Sofia, Bulgaria, where he will continue his studies in orchestral and opera conducting.

León began his musical training in violin and piano at the age of 13, and later continued his development as a violinist at the Instituto Tlaxcalteca de la Cultura (ITC), where he also commenced his training in conducting. He pursued his violin studies at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) (2016-2020), graduating with a Bachelor of Music (B.M.) Cum Laude after receiving a 100% Artistic Scholarship. Concurrently, he nurtured his musical artistry with a solid foundation in classical ballet.

Prominent figures in the world of symphonic music, such as Lanfranco Marcelletti, Kenneth Kiesler, Adrian Slywotzky, Gaétan Kuchta, and Fernando Lozano, among other eminent maestros, have guided his development as an orchestra conductor. Additionally, his participation as a violinist and conductor in operas, musicals and festivals, as well as at the World Orchestra Conductors Summit 2018 in Spain, and the 22nd Conductors Retreat at Medomak in the United States, significantly consolidated this preparation.

In his professional experience, Armando León, at the age of 17, was the Founder and General Director of the Instituto Nacional de las Artes México (INAM) (2015-2023). He later served as Coordinator and Artistic Director of the university orchestras at the Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP) (2023-2024), an institution that encouraged the young conductor to pursue his master’s studies abroad.

In his burgeoning career, he has shared the stage with distinguished soloists such as Kai Orlinov, Angel Nikolov, Alexander Pashkov, and Paola Gutiérrez Candia; and has conducted renowned symphony orchestras and ensembles, most notably the Vratsa Symphony Orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Puebla (OSEP), the Orquesta Típica del Estado de Puebla (OTEP), the Percussion Ensemble of the Benemérito Conservatorio de Música del Estado de Puebla, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Aguascalientes (OSA), and the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (OSUAEH).

Throughout his professional trajectory, notable milestones stand out. In 2023, Armando León received the “Outstanding Orchestra Conductor” award from the Premios Tlaxcala “Nuestra Identidad” association. That same year, while at his alma mater, he made his opera conducting debut with Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. In 2024, he became the youngest guest conductor to conduct the Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de Puebla (OSEP) and as Music Director for the American premiere of La Bamba! A Musical by Paul Morrisey, with the UDLAP Musical Theater Company. Recently, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada de Oriente highlighted: “He is 26 years old, but his trajectory and passion for music make him seem like a veteran in orchestral conducting.”
